3 Ways to Prepare Your Home for Winter
Winter in Rocky Face, Georgia, might not bring deep snow and single-digit temperatures, but that doesn’t mean you should skip winterizing your home. Take the following steps to prepare your home for winter, so you can keep your family healthy and comfortable.
Find and Fix Any Leaks
To keep heating costs down and improve comfort, spend some time looking for weak spots in your home’s thermal envelope. Check for drafts around windows and doors, and seal any cracks or gaps you find with caulk or weatherstripping. You should also check anywhere pipes, gas lines, electrical lines, vents, or ducts pass through an exterior wall.
Schedule an Inspection
If your home has a fireplace, have a professional clean and inspect your chimney before the first cold snap. You should also schedule furnace maintenance to ensure your heating system will be ready for winter. Regular maintenance gives your HVAC technician the chance to address potential problems and ensure your system is in peak operating condition.
Address Outdoor Issues
Before it gets too cold outside, finish up any outdoor maintenance tasks. Make sure your gutters are clear so any water from rain or melted ice will drain away rather than cause damage to your roof or foundation. Also, take a look at your outdoor plumbing. Disconnect hoses and ensure nozzles and taps are off to prevent damage from ice buildup. If possible, it’s a good idea to insulate pipes if you know temperatures will be at or near freezing.
